Halmahera Island Boa Care (Candoia paulsoni tasmai)

Halmahera Island Boas are a subspecies of the Solomon Island Boas. They are slightly smaller than the Solomon Island Boas and have a more arboreal tendency. They are usually brown in colour, but gold individuals are also known. Nearly all Halmahera Island Boas are wild caught; this species is hard to breed and even harder to rear. Halmahera Island Boas are quite temperamental and caution should be taken when handling. Although they are non-venomous, they have quite a nasty bite. With patience and regular handling however, many wild caught specimens will calm down and take to handling. Adult females can reach 1m in length; males are slightly smaller, around 80cm.

Housing

When keeping any snake as a pet, you generally want to be able to view the snake from the outside of its enclosure, in the most natural surroundings you can offer. This will be more aesthetically pleasing and also aid in the general condition of the snake. If the snake likes its surroundings, it will have a better feeding response and generally grow quicker. A larger vivarium also offers more interest to the snakes life, and by adding branches and other natural products you will enhance the quality of life the snake has, and stop it from becoming lethargic and overweight. Also, being stronger it should have more of a resistance to any viral infections or any other problems that it may encounter later in life.

For an adult female Halmahera Island Boa, a vivarium 90cm Length x 45cm Width x 45cm Height is ample. I have found this subspecies to be less of a problem to feed than other Candoia, and therefore can usually be placed straight into a larger enclosure. However, if your newly imported specimen will not feed, a smaller, dark, confined enclosure should be offered.

Snake enclosures can be made from a number of materials. Most commonly used is a melamine coated wood which covers all sides except the front, which has glass sliding doors. Aquariums can also be used for Halmahera Island Boas, although a specialist lid should be bought or made rather than the original aquarium lid. It is essential when thinking about what type of enclosure you use, you think about these 6 SSSHHH factors:

1) Safety Can the snake or owner injure itself from the enclosure or any appliances held within?

2) Secure Can the snake escape through any small hole or cavity?

3) Size Will the enclosure be appropriately sized?

4) Heating Is the enclosure able to regulate the temperature properly?

5) Humidity Will the enclosure last well in humid conditions? Is there enough ventilation for the moisture to escape?

6) Hygienic Will the enclosure build up a lot of bacteria in small cavities? Is it easy to clean?

By following the steps above, you can have a suitable enclosure made from a variety of materials.

Dcor

Dcor in your tank serves two purposes. First being extra cover for your snake and second, allowing for a more natural and pleasing appearance. When choosing dcor, think about the safety of the snake. Make sure that whatever you decide to use, it is securely fixed and that no rocks, wood or anything heavy can fall and possibly injure, or even kill the snake. You must also make sure that everything used is parasite free. If anything has been picked up from outside, or has originally come from outside, such as cork bark, you should either boil it, or place the item in the oven at 200 degrees Fahrenheit for approximately 30 minutes. Freezing works for some parasites, however others have been known to survive months in freezing conditions. Some parasites found in English conditions last winters in minus temperatures, so it is not entirely effective.

Once all your dcor is parasite free, it is then safe to place inside your enclosure. As a general rule, if you can put pressure on an item to knock it down, a Halmahera Island Boa is certainly capable of doing so. When positioning rocks or heavy objects, make sure they are completely secure. If it is still uneasy, screw them or use superglue to fix them securely. If it is not possible, the rule is simple: Do not place the item in the vivarium!

If you decide to go for a larger enclosure, you must provide plenty of cover and hiding areas. A hiding place can be anything from a tupperware box with a hole cut out to a naturalistic piece of cork bark. There are many brands of fake plants and dcor you can use which is both safe for the animal and pleasing to the eye. Cork bark is available from almost any reptile pet shop in the UK, and can be ordered in if they do not have it in stock. This is excellent cover for any reptile and is 100% natural. One thing you must consider when thinking about the size of the vivarium, is the bigger you go, the more hiding areas you must provide. I recommend at least one hiding place per foot in length of the enclosure.

NOTE: Never use sticky tape in an enclosure; this is an accident waiting to happen. Believe me; removing sticky tape from any snake is no easy task!

Heating

Halmahera Island Boas are in dense forests and are exposed to a fairly constant air temperature. They do not bask in the sun and so it is not as important to provide them with a dedicated hot spot. Instead, having a fairly constant air temperature of 85-90F during the day and 80-85F during the night is fine. A large water bowl should be offered for the snake to fully submerge if required. If your Halmahera Island Boa does this constantly, the vivarium is most probably too hot and should be cooled down slightly.

In my opinion, the ideal way of heating a Halmahera Island Boas enclosure is to use a power plate. This is a small thin square plate, about 25mm thick which is screwed into the top of the vivarium. It does not need to be protected, as there is no way a snake can grip onto it. It is almost invisible to the eye as it simply sits on the ceiling of the vivarium. The only brand available in the UK is HabiStat Reptile Radiator; it is 75 Watts and is sufficient for any vivarium up to 4ft long and possibly larger. It produces no light and therefore in a vivarium you will need a form of lighting as well. A power plate should be used in conjunction with a HabiStat Pulse Proportional Thermostat, which will stop the power reaching the power plate as soon as the temperature goes above the setting, and turn back on as soon as it is too cool. This is one of the most accurate thermostats on the market today.

Ceramic heaters, spot bulbs and heat mats are also ways of heating a vivarium. These all have their advantages and disadvantages, but in my opinion, none quite weigh out to be as good as a power plate.

Lighting

Halmahera Island Boas are primarily nocturnal, meaning they venture out in the dark of night. This is when their main predators are sleeping, and their prey is awake. Lighting for this species is not important. However, having artificial light in a vivarium is aesthetically pleasing to the owner, and is a good addition to a snakes enclosure. They will use this as a photo-period, and their regular time clock will generally adjust to the settings on which you have your light set to.

They do not require any form of special lighting, such as a D3 Ultra-Violet light commonly used for diurnal species. An Arcadia Natural Sunlight Fluorescent Lamp is a good form of lighting. This comes in lengths of 12 up to 48 and I suggest you use the largest size able to fit inside your vivarium.

Humidity

Halmahera Island Boas occur solely on the island of Halmahera, therefore are exposed to a high humidity. This should be replicated in captivity to aid to the general health and well-being of your snake. An 80-90% humidity range will allow to snake to slough its skin properly and become less prone to any problems such as respiratory infections.

Feeding

Juveniles or males should be offered fuzzy or small mice, and as they grow the mice or rats should become larger. An adult Halmahera Island Boa should be fed on large mice or weaner rats. One of these every 2 weeks is ample. Juveniles should be fed on a regular basis, every 7 days is ideal. Their metabolic rate is higher than adults and as they are growing, they need a lot more food to keep them going. Halmahera Island Boas have a low metabolism compared to many snakes, they move very little and do not require the same quantity of food that many other species do. Snakes have the capability of building up a huge fat reserve, and become obese very easily. Taking the weight off however, is a much more difficult task. Obese snakes will not live nearly the length as a healthy snake would due to liver and kidney problems. If you are unsure about your snakes weight, check with a reptile veterinarian.

Lessons Learned From a Snake, a Cake, and an Apple

I dont remember the argument. Its the rage, frustration, and anger I remember. Forty-five years later, I still have no clue WHY I was so angry with my mother.

I do remember something, however. At three years old, revenge wasnt in my vocabulary - but it was in my heart.

Outside on a sunny day a slithering line of brown ripples through lush green grass. Ive found my perfect revenge. A garter snake! Even whispering the word, snake, Is enough to make my mother shiver and shriek.

Racing to the door; up goes the mail slot; in goes the snake.

I sit down and giggle. I wrap my arms around myself and giggle some more. I almost wet myself with delight Im so eager for my mothers coming fright. In my imagination I see Mom walking, suddenly stopping, face turning white, mouth opening, a horrified howl.

I would like to say I heard a scream. I would like to say my revenge was satisfied.

I cant.

Instead I waited for the scream. Wait. Wait. Wait.

Fast forward ten years. Once again Im waiting - waiting for my sisters fiance to get out of the bathroom. He carefully brushes strands of hair forward to cover his bald spot. I watch him spray until his hairs a solid mat of fastidious fibres studiously cemented to the crown of his head like a roosters comb.

Later, I have the pleasure of watching him water ski. Speedos several sizes too small - partially hidden by an overlapping stomach dancing to the drum-beat thump of skis hitting waves, varnished mat of hair flapping up and down in the breeze.

To say I like Don would be like saying a person with a sensitive nose likes the smell of wet burlap bags.

At dinner I notice Don shaking the pepper over his food. And I get an idea for payback. There, on the table, a single slice of birthday cake remains. Ill play a nice little girl and give that slice to Don. But I cant just give him plain vanilla cake. I have to spice it up.

I lift the icing - and add pepper. I even scoop out part of the cake and scoop in a teaspoon of pepper. Carefully I reassemble the cake. My brilliant alterations are barely noticeable.

Innocence exuding from my face, Im an angel, bearing a gift in my hands. I offer the cake to Don. He lifts a fork to his lips.

I anticipate a cough, cake spewing across the table, Dons eyes watering from the strength of the spice.

I wait. And wait. And wait.

In the years past Ive often wondered if Don saw me doctoring his cake and decided to spoil my plan by showing absolutely no reaction at all. Or was he so used to pepper he never even noticed additional seasoning! Or, perhaps, like my mother, Don was wise enough to know that revenge, like pepper, is a disappointing dish. Its best not served at all?

Lets go back to when I was three years old, sitting on the front porch, waiting for Mom to scream. Mom heard the bronze mail flap shut - CRACK. Looking into the hall, she sees IT! Her first instinct is to scream. But my giggling gives me away. If she screams, Ill learn to revel in revenge. If she berates me, well all that will do is build a wall of anger between us.

Mom steps over the snake, opens the hall closet, gets her broom. Sweep, sweep, sweep - down the stairs and out the back door. One reptile out the door, the other giggling on the front porch.

Mom always said, Things done in spite dont turn out right.

I heard it often enough. Too bad I didnt hear it - I never learned from the hearing so I had to learn from the hurting.

Lets go back in time. Im not three. Im not 13. Im 18 this time.

Saturday morning tasks - my mind isnt on scouring the pans, wiping the sink, water pooling on the floor. Instead, Im thinking of the dress I made my sister. Gails difficult to buy clothes for - no waist, no hips. You could say shes not a woman of substance. Most things dont look good on her. Then there are her allergies - only 100% cotton will do.

I knew the dress was going to look good on her before she even slipped it over her head. It did. It looked more than good. Gail was gorgeous!

I finish wiping the counters, grab the garbage, step down the stairs and out the back door. I lift the lid to the garbage can not concentrating on task at hand - that grey blue fabric sure did change Gails blah blue eyes to bright blue.

Grey blue fabric. Grey blue fabric!!??!! Whats it doing in the garbage can?

Drenched and dripping from my hands, the remains of Gails beautiful blue dress. Cut to pieces, soaked in salad dressing. My masterpiece! All my work; all my planning; all the hours away from TV and telephone working to make her beautiful.

Why did she do it?

Revenge! It had to be. Just another instance of getting back at Mom through me.

My childish pranks - the snake, the cake - arent such fun anymore.

Revenge is a lovely apple if you overlook the worms.

Im not three or 13. And Im certainly not thin anymore. I still wrestle with rage, frustration, and anger. However, revenge isnt as tasty as it once was. Now I know the apples sweet but the worms silence your heart.

You never get revenge; it gets you.

Revenge, like a wormy apple, is best left on the ground.

Paternity Testing Kits

Although not too long ago, someone seeking a paternity test would have needed to visit a special clinic or physician to be tested, now you can get a DNA test right in the comfort of your own home. You don't have to have any special skills either. As a matter of fact, while a few years ago, you would have spent an arm and a leg for testing, you can purchase a home test now for as little as $20! Of course, you will need to pay the lab for the processing, but the difference in price is phenomenal.

How the Testing Process Goes:

You will receive the test in the mail after ordering it. For discretion purposes, it will be a plain looking envelope or package and you will also receive a similar plain looking envelope to return the results. You will first label everything so that your test will be identified as yours and you will fill out the envelope. You will follow the testing process directions and collect the required samples and then mail them back to the lab.

There will be different envelopes for each person that will participate in the test. Of course, you must fill out all information on forms and envelopes so that they can be correctly identified. Then you will typically use a treated cotton swab to swab the inside of the left cheek and the inside of the right cheek. There are normally two swabs for each cheek for each person. Of course, be sure that the end of the swab touches nothing but the inside of your cheek. Rub it around on the inside of your mouth, using a circular and up and down motion. Once you have used the swab, immediately put it into the envelope. When you've done both swabs, place them in the envelope and seal them.

Once you have tested each person, the swabs should be in the corresponding envelopes which are filled out and sealed. You will then make sure all forms and payment information is filled out and the information on how your results will come back to you. You can often find out online through your e-mail address. You will place all of the envelopes and such into the larger envelope to mail it. Most companies will have the results ready within a week, but all companies are different. You can also usually get a faster service for an additional fee. Results are 100% accurate if the man is not the father and 99.9999% sure if the man is the father.

Are you uncertain about your child's paternity? Do you desperately need answers but don't know where to turn? Have you considering getting a paternity test but are unsure about how they work? Well, we can help! At DNA Paternity Testing Information, we provide confidential and quality information about home and medical paternity tests.
